Jessica Summerall: The Inspirational Mother And Personal Trainer Talks With TrimmedAndToned
Trimmed&Toned Team.
How Did You Get Started In Health And Fitness?
Funny enough, I hated sports and pretty much everything to do with being active until I was a junior in high school. I took my first weight lifting/aerobics class and I fell in love. I also took my first health and nutrition class that year and got 100%. This is when I found out my passion for health and wellness. My instructor loved the class that my partner and I taught so she asked us to teach a community class for her. Not long after I started teaching aerobics classes at a local gym. When I graduated I joined the military as an Air Traffic Controller. I was moved to work at the Health and Wellness Center because of medical reasons and it further propelled my love for fitness and nutrition.
What Is Your Best Accomplishment So Far?
I have many, which makes me proud in itself! Every year I try to do something that is extremely challenging and terrifying to me so I am constantly growing and expanding my knowledge! The best thing I ever did and makes me the most proud is having my son. He is the reason why I was able to accomplish everything else. I will never forget when I ran for 30 minutes straight for the first time. I was jumping up and down and I couldn’t believe I accomplished that. Even more to my surprise was when I accomplished my first ½ marathon. After that I never thought I would run a marathon but I did. In fact, I did the Goofy. That is a ½ marathon Saturday and a full marathon Sunday. Incredible! That event showed me that you can do anything you want to and whenever I begin to doubt myself I look back and remember what I was capable of.
What Is It Like Competing?
After I completed the Goofy I needed a new challenge. Like I said I always like to have a big goal to keep me motivated and pushing forward. I was burnt out on running and while I was exploring ideas I remembered that before my son I had started training for a fitness competition. I had gained a lot of weight with my son and I have stretch marks on my belly, hips, and legs. I didn’t think I would ever be able to compete.
I contacted the company (Cathy Savage Fitness) that I had started to train with before and they told me stretch marks did not matter. That was what I needed to push me into gear. The nutrition plan and workouts were completely different then what I had currently been doing. I had to limit my running which I wasn’t thrilled about but the results were great! It was interesting to watch my body composition change but not my weight. I looked great but hadn’t lost a pound. The whole experience really put into perspective for me that weight is just a number and that I should not judge myself by the number on the scale but by the actions that I take every day to take care of myself and to help other people.
My worth was so much more than my looks and that was the biggest gift I could have ever got. I worked very hard and had to break out of my comfort zone on many different levels to compete. I was so blessed to have several very close friends drive 10 hours and stay the weekend with me to watch me compete. They put notes up in the hotel room to encourage me, they cheered me on, and they bought me gifts for my accomplishment. My husband was deployed but my son was also able to come and watch me. My friends and family made it a very special day. Leaving the competition I had many mixed emotions. You are judged on your body with other girls that have worked very hard also. Competing is very expensive and time consuming and it can leave the most beautiful girls striving for someone else’s idea of perfection.
I am very happy that I competed and I was brave enough to conquer my fears. It opened up so many doors for me. However, I don’t think that I will compete again. I love fitness modelling and it’s enjoyable to me. Being in front of the camera and having fun with props and different types of photography is where I feel the happiest! This is where I have placed more focus now.
You Where Recently Featured On Bodybuilding.com For Your Amazing Transfomation, Could You Tell Us About That?
Someone had told me I should send my transformation into Bodybuilding.com. I did, but I never thought they would feature it. I was pleasantly surprised when I got an email from Josh Brunner with BodyBuilding.com telling me they wanted to feature my transformation. He was wonderful to work with and very polite! It was an honour to be featured by such a large company and the kindness they showed was totally unexpected.
What Tips Would You Give Someone Looking To Transform Their Lives?
1. Find your reason “why”. What will your life look like if you don’t make this transformation and what will it look like if you do?
2. Get rid of the “all or nothing” mentality. You will have bad days. At some point you will miss a workout or have a rough workout. You will most likely eat something bad from time to time. You are human. Just because you at a donut for breakfast doesn’t mean you need to sabotage the rest of your day. Just because you missed a workout doesn’t mean you need to skip them for the rest of the week.
3. Get accountable. Find a coach, a trainer, or a really good friend who will check up on your and hold you accountable to your goals. Find someone who isn’t afraid to give you a little tough love instead of someone who will enable you to stray from your goals.
4. Track your progress. Weight is not the only way and it certainly isn’t the best way to see how you are progressing. Have your body fat percentage test, take measurements, and take pictures in a swim suit every 6-8 weeks.
What Workout Routine Has Worked Best For You?
My workout changes all the time depending on what I am training for. Right now I am training for a ½ marathon in October and a full in January. I also have a photo shoot in October so while I need to work on endurance and speed I also need to stay lean and cut. Here is my plan right now:
Monday: Legs! The workout varies but I stick with lighter weight and higher reps on this day. My legs are very strong and bulk easy. I have to stick with lights weights!
Tuesday: 3 mile run. I try to include sprints in this run to ensure I am getting high intensity workouts in.
Wednesday: Arms/back/chest. I dread this day as my upper body doesn’t shape as easily as my lower body does. I try to lift heavy with low reps on this day.
Thursday: 3 mile run.
Friday: Full body strength training. This workout is lighter weights, faster paced, higher intensity.
Saturday: This alternates between a 3-4 mile run and a longer run.
Sunday: REST

What Is The Best Advice You Have Ever Been Given?
Tough one! I have surrounded myself with so many amazing people that it is truly hard to pick one nugget of advice that served me the best. I will share my favourite quote instead. I love this and I feel it silently touches on so many different areas in life.
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
– Marianne Williamson
Did You Make Any Mistakes When You First Started Out?
As David Wood says all the time “Every master was once a disaster, including me”. I have made so many mistakes I can’t remember them all. I had situations where I felt like a complete failure but months or years later I found out those failures served a purpose and they weren’t failures at all. We all get knocked down. It’s what you do while you’re down there that matters. Are you going to give up or get up?
What’s Your Favourite Body Part?
I suppose we aren’t talking features so I won’t say my eyes! I would say my abs and my legs are my favourite body parts. My legs are strong and they shape so easily. My abs amaze me. They had to stretch and make room for a very large child and then with good nutrition come back to show a 6 pack! I’m intrigued by the human body and all that it is capable of.
Your Best Tips To Getting Into Contest Shape/Losing Those Last Few Pounds?
Surround yourself with people who “get it” and support you. The last 4 weeks before a competition or photo shoot are tough. You’ve got to stay mentally strong and have a good support system to turn to in moments of weakness!
What’s Your Gym Playlist Like? Favourite Song To Play While Running?
I actually don’t listen to music when I workout, or very rarely at least. I typically listen to audio books and podcast. I am very business oriented and I am also very busy. I don’t have time to read but I love to listen. Some of my favourites are Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, The Four Agreements, and Awaken the Giant Within.
Where Does Your Motivation Come From?
My motivation comes from many different places. I am very motivated by people who have already achieved greatness and who are utilizing that greatness to make an impact on the world. I am surrounded by people who accomplish so many different amazing tasks all the time. They push their limits and they do things they never could have dreamed of. Their actions and accomplishments motivate me.
My own accomplishments motivate me. I look at what I used to feel and think I was capable of and all that I have done. I know that there is nothing I can’t do and I will strive everyday to reach every single one of my goals. Of course, last and certainly not least, my son and my husband motivate me!
Favourite Fitness Models? Inspirations?
Lori Harder is one of my favourite fitness models ever. She is also my business partner. The woman is beautiful inside and outside and she just keeps excelling at everything she does. I also love Jamie Eason. She is not only beautiful but she has a heart of gold and she’s not afraid to be who she really is and speak about her faith to such a critical audience. Kelsey Byers is another one. She has made such a great transformation and to see all that she has been able to accomplish is so motivating.
Favourite Quotes?
I have so many! Don’t take anything personally.
Life isn’t about finding yourself, it’s about creating yourself.
By working faithfully 8 hours a day you may get eventually get to be boss… and work 12 hours a day. (I’m a business owner and network marketer so I love this quote)
Work Smarter, Not Harder
