Weight Loss Diet:

The diet I followed for the majority of my weight loss, after my VSG and I was able to eat again, was:

Breakfast: 1 Cup Special K advantage with 1 cup skim milk (plus half a banana)
Morning Snack: A banana and handful of cashews or almonds (unsalted)
Lunch: I made a salad with lettuce, carrot, mushroom, tomato and avocado
Afternoon Tea: A banana or punnet of strawberries
Dinner: Small serving of brown rice and a tin of tuna with basil and tomato

I followed this for almost the first year of my weight loss journey. I don’t get bored easily, and when I find something successful for myself, I don’t generally stray. It works for me.

Weight Loss Workout:

The key to my success has been keeping my exercise interesting and fresh. I work as much as possible, stay active and do heaps of fun exercise.

Monday: Generally my running day. After work I run between 7-10km
Tuesday: Double day. Early morning yoga and then lunchtime bootcamp
Wednesday: Morning boxing and then after work bootcamp
Thursday: Gentle day. I’m pretty spent by this time, so generally a long walk and evening yoga
Friday: Evening yoga at the least
Weekend: I like going on long walks and I do yoga both days

How Did You Put On The Weight?

I was always the fat kid. My dad’s side of the family are all pretty big people, so I guess genetics played a small part in my inactivity, laziness and horrible eating. I coped with problems in my life by eating, and now I’ve learnt how to look after myself without that.

What Was Your Diet Like Originally?

Horrific. I used to eat “normal meals” in massive servings, but also ate kilograms of chocolate, and other snacks constantly. I would demolish around a kilogram of chocolate a day.

What Made You Start Getting Healthy?

I realized that I had no life, no future, and was looking for a way to end it all. I realized that I never actually wanted to die. I wanted to have a family, travel, work, and actually have a life. I was tired of being bullied and hating myself, so I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable of anything.

When Did You Start Seeing Results?

It started really about 30kg into my weight loss, I couldn’t really see much for a very long time. Starting in a size 26 gives you lots of room to lose a large amount of weight before noticing a change

What Small Changes Do You Think Had The Biggest Impact?

Really cutting back on overeating. The food that I was eating was in no way nourishing or nutritious. I started to have much more energy, saw a change in my skin and circulation.

How Did You Stay Motivated?

Seeing the changes and seeing that I was capable of being something incredible I pushed and continue to push myself to the limits everyday. I want to see just what I can achieve.

Were There Any Particular Tough Points On Your Journey?

Several. Almost daily. Keeping the motivation and strength up to decline unhealthy food is a daily battle. I find it exceptionally tough especially when going through emotional problems.

Could You Tell Us About The Surgeries You Had After Your Weight Loss?

I had a full body lift (belt lipectomy) and breast lift in 2013. The excess skin I had really took it’s toll on me. I had to exercise with at least one pair of spanx and I was constantly uncomfortable. It has made a huge difference in my quality of life and appearance.

What Advice Would You Give Someone Looking To Lose Weight?

I would advise to see a psychologist at the beginning of your journey. For me personally, my weight and bad relationship with food stemmed from emotional and mental health issues. I think facing all those problems helps you sort out the foundations of the real problem that you have. From there you can work on overhauling your entire life. You can’t change your body without changing your mindset.

What Are Your Favourite Healthy/Weight Loss Recipes?

I love grilled chicken and pumpkin salads, but various granolas and fruit are my true favourite foods. I really just make basic, but nourishing foods.

How Does It Feel After Completing Such An Amazing Transformation & Inspiring So Many People On Your Social Media?

I try to be the best example I can be for people in situations similar to mine. At the same time, I’m 100% real. Stretch marks, binges, struggles and everything that actually happens in this transformation. People need to see reality. If they think my journey is easy, and attempt their own and find how hard it is, I don’t want people to be disheartened or quit. It is the single toughest and simultaneously rewarding journey I’ve ever been through. The journey will never be complete. It’s a daily battle, but I’m proud that I’m equipped with the tools to fight every day.
